Shakespeare School Festival 2012

On the 18th October 2012 Walworth Academy students wowed the audience with a witty and energetic performance of ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ at the Unicorn Theatre. This year casts was made up of students from Year 8 to Year 13; which is a first for Walworth. One of the most amazing things was that we were able to showcase the range of talent and personalities of our cast on stage. This made our performance unique!

Below is some of the feedback Walworth Students received from audience members, festival organisers, directors and theatre staff.

Drama students to perform in STEP Conference 2013

The following year 10 drama students have been attending Abhimanyu Storytelling Theatre Project independently after school for STEP Festival 2012– S.T.E.P (Southwark Theatres’ Education Partnership)

The students will then perform at the STEP Conference 2013 on Saturday 2 February at Canada Water Culture Space. The event will be all day.
They will be speaking in front of investors, artist, and other industry and educational specialists about the importance of studying drama in schools for young people

New author, Ellie Danes, visits the library

Children’s author Ellie Danes came to talk to two Year 7 classes about her first novel Lolly Luck, a delightful story of a young girl Lolly who is usually the luckiest person ever, but whose luck seems to run out when her dad loses his job and the family home. Then she overhears a secret that will make sure her life is never the same again. The character of Lolly and her life, the author explained, was based on her own childhood experiences. Ellie had her audience gripped by her entertaining talk which included a short film, available on YouTube. There was time at the end of students to buy copies and have them signed and dedicated to them by the author.

Princess Anne visits Walworth

HRH The Princess Royal visited Walworth Academy on Thursday. She spent time with pupils - visiting a science lesson, orchestra rehearsal and observing a group discussion - and met staff, including eight long-serving members of staff who between them have served the school for a total of 155 years.

As part of her visit the Princess Royal opened the academy’s Peace Garden, which is a memorial to former pupil David Idowu.

Commenting after the visit, Walworth Principal Devon Hanson said: “It was an honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to Walworth Academy and to have her open the Memorial Garden. Staff and students very much enjoyed meeting her and talking about life at the school and we were delighted to be able to show her a range of the academic and extra-curricular activities on offer at the academy.”

Ark KS3 Sports Day 2012

On Wednesday 13^th June 2012, the first Ark KS3 Sports Day was held at the Linford Christie Stadium. The day was a beautiful sun shiny day. A marked contrast to the days of rain leading up to the event that had us all biting our nails and wondering how the weather was going to treat us.

It was the first time that all of the Ark secondary schools had come together to compete against one another on such a huge scale, and weigh up the sporting abilities of the top athletes in our schools. Even though the Ark schools were all in competition against one another, the camaraderie and ‘sportsman’ like behaviour was amazing. All athletes, no matter where they were positioned in their events, from first to last, were congratulated, cheered on and encouraged to perform at their best. On this day, the Ark Secondary Academies truly lived up to the Olympic and Paralympic values of Respect, Friendship, Excellence, Inspiration, Courage, Equality and Determination.

From the performances, we created our first Hall of Fame. To get onto the Hall of Fame, athletes had to win their events. These students are the trail blazers, throwing down the gauntlet for future generations of throwers, jumpers and sprinters to follow. We look forward to many more years of healthy competition amongst the academies.

As part of our drive to raise standards in literacy, we are asking for parent volunteers to come and take part in an exciting new reading project.

Parents will be paired with a student (or a small group of students up to a maximum of 3 and will read with the pupils, using a set of prepared questions to check understanding and to make the reading experience as interesting as possible.

We are looking for volunteers who are able commit an hour a week minimum and who would be able to come in to school during timetabled library lessons.

WALWORTH ACADEMY REPORTS GCSE ACHIEVEMENT

Walworth Academy is celebrating a continued strong performance in this year’s GCSE results, its fifth as Walworth Academy. 62% of students achieved at least 5 A*- C grades including English and mathematics, a rise of 35 percentage points since the school opened as an academy in 2007 (2011, 69%).

85% achieved A* - C grades in mathematics, (2011, 80%) - up from just 37% in 2007
17% of mathematics passes are at grade A or A*
66% achieved A* - C in English, (2011, 73%) - up from 48% in Walworth School in 2007
14% of English passes are at grade A or A*

Walworth Academy announces A Level results

Walworth Academy Sixth Form is celebrating its first A level results.

71.4% of students achieved grades of A* - C at A Level
62.3% of students gained grades of A* - C at AS Level
60.4% of students are progressing to university, including Russell Group places at Oxford, UCL, Southampton and Queen Mary, University of London.

HSBC visit – How to become a banker

Nine students currently studying Applied Business Studies GCSE from Year 10 went on an exciting and educational visit to the HSBC headquarters in Canary Wharf. The students accompanied by Miss Docherty and Mr Wright, discovered how to present themselves in a business setting and learn what it takes to take become a banker. The emphasis was all about getting the best grades possible at GCSE, doing solid academic A Levels and getting a good degree from a Russell Group University. That and a passion to succeed will lead to a career in one of the world’s largest banks.

The students got to access parts of the building normally restricted to most employees! They got to go up the HSBC tower and sit in the prestigious HSBC board room, which was simply awe inspiring. The students really appreciated the experience, which was organised by the Into University Group.

Maybe in 10 years’ time we’ll see one of these bright business minds sit as part of the board for HSBC!

Southwark Book Award drama workshops, 21 June 2012

A Year 7 class from Walworth Academy and a Year 6 class from Townsend Primary School, one of Walworth Academy’s feeder primaries, have been reading the Southwark Book Award shortlist – six books published last year, selected by local librarians to compete for the award.

To help students engage more with the books, Walworth Academy library invited the Townsend Primary School Year 6 class to join the Year 7 class in Babbage Hall for some drama workshops based on the characters and plots of the novels. The workshops started with some games to break the ice and settle any nerves. Next the children were organised into groups to come up with ideas for short scenes to act out from the books.
It was wonderful to see some real acting talent emerging, and to note how well and how quickly the two Year groups were getting on. It was clear lots of friendships were forming. Some Year 6 pupils showed impressive leadership qualities, coming up with ideas and taking charge of the directing. The students all worked hard for two hours without a break and threw themselves into the tasks with great enthusiasm. For the primary school children, this experience will help towards preparing them for transition to secondary school.
By taking part it is hoped that all of them will now be inspired to finish the books before the end of June when they will be voting for their favourite out of the six. Once all the votes from all the schools taking part have been counted, the winning book will be announced on 2 July on the Southwark Book Award website.

Creative Writing Club trip to Saison Poetry Library

On Wednesday 16^th May, the Creative Writing Club visited the Saison Poetry Library at the Southbank Centre. The poetry library only stocks poetry books and is completely unique in London. It was a first visit to the iconic Southbank Centre for most of the group and we enjoyed the singing lift on the way to the library.

We enjoyed a library tour and then had a guided poetry writing session with Chris McCabe, which focussed on science as a theme. The activities help you to write poems in a short space of time. Each student wrote 3 poems in half an hour!

There were wooden boxes on the table and at the end of the session Chris revealed that these were specially built kaleidoscopes! When we looked inside we were surprised to see landscapes in space and we had to pretend we were astronauts to describe what we saw.

To finish our trip we ate our packed lunch at the Southbank centre and enjoyed the views of Westminster across the river.

Visit from a Children’s Story teller

On Wednesday, 2^nd May, the Creative Writing Club hosted a visit from children’s story teller, Cethan Leahy. Cethan writes stories, novels and makes films which are aimed at young people. He writes in a funny, original style which is similar to that of Lemony Snicket, a popular author in the library. He entertained us with a humorous tale and gave our students advice on how to develop original ideas for their own stories. Cethan used his expertise to help us to rewrite and update classic Dickens stories with illustrations.

Anthony McGowan Visits the Library

As part of Reading Week, the library invited the award-winning author Anthony McGowan to come and talk to three KS3 classes about his books. Having started out as a novelist for adults, McGowan found fame with novels aimed at teenagers, in particular The Knife That Killed Me, winner of the Booktrust Teenage Prize, which he announced was in the process of being made into a film. He read an extract from the book which totally gripped his audience with its realistic portrayal of gang violence.

The main focus of his talk, however, was on his latest series of books aimed at 10 to 13 year olds, based on the life of a schoolboy called Dermot Milligan and his addiction to donuts. The first book in the series, called The Donut Diaries, has been chosen for the Southwark Book Award. Mrs Toworfe’s English class, 7C1, along with a class of year 6 from Townsend Primary School, are reading all six books short-listed for the award and The Donut Diaries is a favourite to win. When the votes from all the participating Southwark schools have been counted, the winning book will be announced on 2 July. Children who enjoy The Diary of A Wimpy Kid will love these stories of a boy’s first experience of secondary school and will relate to the familiar difficulties Dermot has of trying to fit in and make friends. The second book, Revenge is Sweet, has just been published, and a third, Escape from Camp Fatso, will be published soon.

McGowan turned out to be a hugely entertaining speaker, totally unabashed about pretending to be a chimpanzee in order to recreate a hilarious scene when Dermot has an unfortunate encounter in the ape house at the zoo. The loud hoots attracted the attention of a surprised group of the sixth formers trying to study in peace next door! As a climax, McGowan (having checked with the teachers that they were happy to allow this beforehand) asked for two volunteers to eat a whole banana in one go, skin and all. What with the mimicking of chimps and the students egging on their friends the library has never been so noisy! Afterwards there was time for the children to buy discount copies of his books, signed and dedicated by the author. Anthony McGowan made a deep impression and it is certain that neither the children or the librarians and teachers will forget the visit for a long time. It is hoped the author will return as a guest to the Southwark Book Award party to be held in the library for year 6 from Townsend Primary School and 7C1 English class to help celebrate the Southwark Book Award winner.

Debating Team Wins 2 out of 3 debates in all-day Ark network debates

The team consisting of: Oluwakemi Alake Yr9 Chaplin, Bunmi Oloko-Oluwatobi Yr9 Chaplin, Naomi Mankrado Yr9 Babbage, Pepectual Ehomah Yr9 Babbage, Anastasiya Ben Yr 8 Chaplin Won two out of their three debates and only narrowly lost their third debate to the eventual winners of the entire competition.

Ms Marshall Comments: "I was incredibly proud to be their teacher and they gave a fantastic representation of Walworth Academy in every aspect of the day". When you see these pupils tomorrow please acknowledge their incredible achievement.

The Debating Club runs every Friday after school with 12 members and it is my aim in September to increase this number.

Music students trip to Trinity College of Music (Gifted and Talented jazz cohort)

On the 8^th March 2012, the following young musicians visited the Trinity College of Music, at Greenwich University: Chinedozie Onokwai, Badewa Lahan, Ayodeji Ijishakin, Kaidi Akinnibi, Samuel Murray, Sean Osei-Agyemang, Jennifer Chenh, Felicia Mills, Denae Francis. They were initially met by Simon Purcell (Head of Jazz Studies), who answered some of the students questions about practise, what playing experiences were his most favourite, and which musicians had inspired him the most. The College had then very kindly arranged for the students to listen to a performance and masterclass by the Empirical Jazz Quartet, who are recent MOBO award winners.

They played a variety of new pieces and then discussed how they had written them, and many aspects of composition and improvisation. The group then finished their visit with a jam session with some of the Trinity College students, the highlight of which was exchanging call and response solo improvisations with the graduate students.

The trip was very well received by all pupils who went, and created quite a buzz of excitement! The pupils were discussing all the way home, their musical ambitions and dreams. It was extremely important for them, as it impressed on our young players just how much practise they would have to do, and how dedicated they would have to be to be accepted to study at such a high level. Huge thanks to the Trinity College of Music for hosting us.

Year 10 Pupils win Design Museum award

A team of pupils from Walworth Academy, Southwark, have won this year’s Design Museum Design Ventura award, for their game Slick Shooter.

Ali Esayed, Jason Campbell, Olutobi Lawal and Trevan Gibbs, from Walworth Academy

The youngsters will receive a £1000 bursary along with a five-day programme of workshops from professional designers, and will see their product sold in the Design Museum Shop.

Slick Shooter is inspired by the traditional tiddlywinks game and is a product that can be assembled from a piece of plastic the size of an Oyster Card.

Sebastian Conran, who awarded the pupils their prize, says, ‘On the face of it Slick Shooter may look like a tiddlywinks hybrid, but it is really the sophistication of the gameplay, rules and playground league where the design thinking is evident.’

The Walworth Academy pupils saw off projects by more than 1000 students from 32 London state schools to win the prize.

Design Ventura is a three-year education initiative run by the Design Museum for 14-to-16-year-olds, which challenges pupils to fulfil a brief, problem-solve and pitch ideas professionally.

On Thursday 26^th January, three students in Year 9 (Kenni Lam, Jessica Mak and Amin Elmourabit) represented Walworth Academy in presenting a proposal for an online portal of local events to a panel of industry professionals at the Southwark Council office in Tooley street. The presentation was in the form of the popular television show (Dragon's Den) in which students from the four participating Southwark schools presented their ideas and had the opportunity to answer questions from the Dragons.

The judges were particularly impressed by Walworth student’s use of ICT, background research and links to the community. They came second and were awarded Amazon vouchers.

New writing talent emerges at Walworth Academy!

New writing talent emerges at Walworth Academy! The library’s creative writing club entered a poetry writing competition held by Rewrite, a South London arts organisation that promotes diversity and works to bring young people from different backgrounds together. The theme of the competition was foreign lands. We were delighted to discover that out of hundreds of entries, our club had two winners! Richard Olakunle, Year 9, wrote a poem about how London appears to foreigners, and was chosen as a winner and Anastasiya Ben, also Year 9, was chosen as a runner up.

The students have the exciting opportunity of seeing their work performed as part of a performance piece at the Oval House Theatre on the 2^nd February. Congratulations to them both!

Sixth Former Visit Local University Library

The school library has been forming links with London Southbank University in order to give Sixth Formers a taste of how a higher education library works. On Friday 13 January, a group of health and social care students spent a morning at the university based at Elephant and Castle, which has a large health and social care department. They were greeted by student ambassadors who showed them round the Perry Library and its impressive facilities. The students were instructed by the librarian into the workings of the onlline catalogue, how to search effectively for information using databases, and how to find books and journals on the library shelves. Whilst there, the students carried out research related to their coursework which they were able to take away with them at the end of the session.

Sandra Sankar, their teacher, who accompanied them, was very impressed by the training they received and felt that the research skills they learned will play an important part in helping them achieve better results. It is hoped that the students will be given temporary library passes allowing them to use the LSBU library. Following on from the success of this initial visit, the school library hopes to organise other sessions for the business and the engineering students.

Visit to the V&A Museum of Childhood

On Wednesday, 16^th November, the librarians brought the Creative Writing Club on a trip to the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. We visited the exhibitions ‘Magic Worlds’ and ‘The Stuff of Nightmares’ to get inspiration for new stories based around fairy tales, mystery and the imagination. Students were encouraged to find three magical objects that they could use in their writing. Popular items included a real-life magician’s box, a giant robot and a wizard’s cloak. We watched magic tricks displayed on the screens and then went on to explore the rest of the collection, which is filled with an interesting array of children’s toys and items from Victorian times onwards. Particular highlights were Asian shadow puppets and giant, life-like doll houses.

The museum has an interactive approach and the children enjoyed playing with many of the items, which included costumes, puppets shows, board games and a police car.

A good day was had by all and we enjoyed discussing our ideas for stories on the bus back to Walworth Academy. The majority of stories will focus on haunted museums, mysterious magicians and evil dolls. We’re looking forward to reading them.

I asked the children for their opinions on the museum afterwards. Here are some of their comments:

Ilsa Bick, American author, visits Walworth Academy library

On 18 October Walworth Academy library hosted a talk given by award-winning, best-selling American author, Ilsa J. Bick. Ilsa was touring England to publicise her latest teen novel, Ashes, a dystopian thriller to be published in October.

She enthralled the Year 7s and 8s with her description of the plot about a girl caught up in a post-apocalyptic world. An electromagnetic pulse has swept the sky zapping every electronic device and killing most adults. This sparked an interesting debate firstly about the meaning of ‘apocalypse’ and ‘dystopia’, which then moved on to scientific questions about electricity and sun flares. Described as an apocalyptic zombie horror novel, the book ends with a thrilling, terrifying cliff-hanger. Ashes is the first in what will be a trilogy of novels.

Ilsa Bick explained how she came quite late to writing, having started her career as a child psychiatrist and forensic scientist. This drew some gruesome questions from her audience about death which the children seem to relish! Ilsa Bick spent time at the end signing and dedicating copies of Ashes to the children who were thrilled to be among the first in the country to own a copy.

The library throws a party to celebrate the Southwark Book Award

The Southwark Book Award has been inspiring children to read for pleasure, while helping them with transition from primary to secondary school, since 2007.

Two classes from Surrey Square Junior School and Walworth Academy read the six books and voted for their favourite. The winning book, Big Nate by Lincoln Pierce, was announced at the end of term and to celebrate all the children got together in the library for an afternoon of entertainment and refreshments.

As well as quizzes and games, there was a storyteller, Sandra Agard, from Southwark public libraries, and a surprise guest, Joe Layburn, one of the shortlisted authors, who read extracts from his book Street Heroes. The children were thrilled to be the first to hear about the sequel Runaways which has only just been published. William, Year 6, said the best thing was meeting an author in real life. Ayodeji, Year 7, enjoyed ‘meeting new people and reading great books’. Denae, Year 6, enjoyed ‘working with Year 7 and reading books I’ve never read before’.

For those that are coming to Walworth Academy in September, we hope that the school will already feel familiar to them through taking part in the award and that they will feel inspired to come to the library and borrow lots of books!

David Cameron praises Walworth Academy

David Cameron acknowledged the best ever results for Walworth Academy during a speech on Friday 9th September on education. Here is an extract from his speech highlighting the excellence of Walworth Academy as an example to other secondary schools:

“Our plans mean by the end of next year, we will have transformed around 150 failing secondaries and 200 failing primaries into Academies. And today, we’re considering whether we need to go further and faster. Because it’s not just failing schools we need to tackle. It’s coasting schools, too – the ones whose results have either flat-lined, or where they haven’t improved as much as they could have. Just take this one fact.

Take two schools – Burlington Danes Academy and Walworth Academy. They are both in relatively deprived parts of inner London with high proportions of pupils on free school meals. But you know what? Last year, 70 per cent of Walworth pupils and 75 per cent of Burlington Danes pupils got 5 or more good GCSEs including English and Maths.

Compare that with Surrey and Oxfordshire – the counties that Michael and I represent. Only 16 state secondary schools in these two relatively affluent counties did better than those two inner city schools. Put another way, more than 4 out of 5 state schools in Surrey and Oxfordshire are doing worse than 2 state schools in relatively deprived parts of inner London. That must be a wake-up call.”

Walworth Academy students gaining 5 GCSEs including Maths and English rise to 70%

Walworth Academy students are celebrating today after the school achieved record GCSE results.

70% of pupils passed at least 5 GCSEs including English and mathematics at A* ‐ C grades ‐ UP 11 percentage points on the previous year (2010, 59%, 2009, 45%)
80% achieved A* – C grades in mathematics, up from 78% in 2010 and 59% in 2009
25% A*‐A grade in maths
73% of pupils achieved A* – C in English, up from 65% in 2010 and 56% in 2009
16% A*‐A grade achieved in English

Principal Devon Hanson said: “I am immensely proud of the students gaining these results and I’m particularly pleased that significant numbers of our young people are achieving at the highest level of A*‐A. This outstanding performance from all of our students takes Walworth Academy to a milestone 70% A*‐C.

“We’re particularly pleased with our pupils’ achievements in English and mathematics which indicate the progress they are making across the board and put them in a strong position for the continuation of their studies at Walworth Academy’s Sixth Form.

“These results are a strong indicator that we are consistently moving toward our interim goal that more than 80% of our students will gain at least 5 A* ‐ C grades including English and mathematics. “I’d like to acknowledge the commitment of staff and the dedication of students and their families in these outstanding results.”

Southwark Book Award drama workshops

On Friday 17 June a Year 6 class from Surrey Square Junior School enjoyed a morning of drama with 7B1 English class organised by the library. The workshops, led by Drama4Learning, were based on the novels shortlisted for the Southwark Book Award.

The two classes from Walworth Academy and from Surrey Square School have both been reading the six shortlisted books. This was an opportunity for the primary school children to get a taste of secondary school and have fun at the same time. The session started with a bingo type game to break the ice and help the children get to know each other. This was followed by group work where the children acted out scenes from the books.

The children’s knowledge of the plots and characters in the books was impressive and they threw themselves into the activities with great enthusiasm. To celebrate the winning book, which will be announced on the SBA website on 4 July, there will be a party at John Harvard Library in Borough to which two children from Walworth Academy and Surrey Square schools will be invited. Walworth Academy library is holding its own party for the two Year 6 and Year 7 classes on 15 July.

The library is thrilled to announce that one of the authors shortlisted for the award, Joe Layburn, has agreed to be there. He will be bringing copies of his book to dedicate to the children. It is hoped that through participating with the Year 7s in this project the Year 6s will have gained confidence and for those that are coming to Walworth Academy, the school will have a feeling of familiarity when they return in September.

“Walworth Mathletics Day On 5th of May 2011 Walworth Academy held its first “Walworth Mathletics Day”. It was presented to the KS3 pupils in the form of “Live Mathletics” competition on stage in Babbage Hall. Finalists competed against one another to win a place in the Trip to Duxford Air Museum in Cambridge. Winners’ prize also included 25 minutes flying in a 1936 De-Havilland Dragon Rapide Bi-Plane. The 24 winners of the final knockout Live Mathletics competition went to the museum on board a coach on the morning of 11th May 2011. You will be able to see in the video clip how the trip was worthwhile and enjoyable for all concern. Well Done the participants.

Walworth Academy host rapper and pop star Tinchy Stryder

‘Walworth Academy was very excited to host the rapper and pop star, Tinchy Stryder on Monday morning, here to launch the ‘Teaching Awards 2011’ and its new feature, ‘Thank a Teacher’, in which pupils can upload youtube clips thanking their favourite teacher and saying why they were so inspiring.

Tinchy answered lots of questions from a group of yr10 and 12 students; the questions ranged from queries about his music career to questions focusing on when Tinchy was at school.

Tinchy said that his Maths teacher was the best teacher he had had. He told the students that they needed to focus and work hard at school, and try to persevere to achieve their goals. Tinchy also talked about how he managed to juggle his music career whilst taking a degree. Tinchy’s dedication and hard work were inspirational to Walworth pupils. It was great to meet and get to know someone who is incredibly successful and talented, but who also works really hard and went to a normal school in East London. In many ways, Tinchy’s success shows our pupils that anything is possible if we aim to be the best that we can be’

Walworth Academy students star in “Top Boy” - a Channel 4 Drama production.

Walworth Academy has hosted a number of filming sessions for ”Top Boy”, a four part series taking a closer look at the issues that can affect the lives of young people in London. The writer Ronan Bennett has worked with young people over a number of years, encouraging them to steer clear of the problems that are present in many areas of the city. One of the main characters in the feature is Cameron, a 14 year old boy whose interest in Art and Design offer him a positive outlet from the hardships of daily life. The producers were interested in our school’s buildings, as they provided interesting angles for the filming.

However that was not all, as we were then informed that Channel 4 was also looking for pupils in Years 8 - 11 to act or appear as extras in the feature. The filming took place during the bank holiday weekend and it was a fantastic experience for our many performers, with the chance to star on TV, in a serious drama production.

The production team were very impressed. Here are some of their comments:

“I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to staff and students in the school for all of your efforts to put things together for Top Boy.

You guys were amazing. The kids were great. The Director was VERY IMPRESSED. The scenes are going to look great.

Watch out for Top Boy in October! I hope that the students enjoyed themselves and felt involved. We couldn't have done it without them!!”

And what did our aspiring dramatists think about this experience?

“When I was in” Top Boy” I experienced how a television drama would be made. While filming I had to do a lot of retakes but at the end it was worth it and I am proud that I did it. On behalf of Walworth pupils we would like to say thank you for the experience the school gave to us” Natnael Tedros

Ken Howard talks to two year 7 classes

Ken Howard – film producer, song-writer (he wrote songs for Elvis Presley), TV script writer and now children’s author – visited Walworth Academy on Friday 20 May to give a presentation to two year 7 classes on his debut novel, The Young Chieftain.

He first wrote the story as a film script for Walt Disney films. It never made it to the screen because the hero’s father dies in the book and this was thought to be too distressing. So he decided to turn it into a book instead. The hero, Jamie, is a mixed-race Californian boy whose comfortable existence in Los Angeles is suddenly changed forever when his father dies. He travels to a remote Scottish island where he has to leave behind his former life of iPods and PlayStations. He is soon plunged into the heart of ancient feuds, which put his life at risk. As the author says, the book is not only an adventure story, but also about what we are and who we can become.

During his presentation, Ken brought up interesting issues to discuss:

Do we really know who we are? People sometimes discover surprising facts about their ancestors. What if you discovered something surprising about your background/ancestors? What effect would it have on you?
Can we become anything that we want to? What would you really like to become? How much is success due to luck or hard work?
How would you go about writing.. a song...a book? Is singing something better than saying it? Can you say anything in a song? What is inspiration?
What do you know about Scotland? What is a clan? What is a Chieftain?
What does destiny mean, and does it exist?

Students enjoyed the lively and entertaining talk which included musical and video clips and activities for the children. The author stayed behind to sign and dedicated copies of the book to students. The books are also available to borrow from the library.

Walworth Academy’s ‘Text generation’ production

Walworth Academy’s students wrote an emotive, clever and funny play, which depicts their thoughts, life experiences and aspirations. Skilfully edited by Carl Thomas, Unicorn Theatre’s chief playwright, the production will be staged live at Walworth Academy performed by professional actors from the Unicorn Theatre’s Young company.

“This was an exciting project for the students as well as the literacy & drama department. It is fantastic that we can bring it back to the Academy where it all began” – Ms Rhooms Co-ordinator of Drama.

Walworth Academy take part in Bridges to Africa

On Sunday May 15th two teachers and 15 pupils completed a sponsored walk from Vauxhall to Tower Bridge, covering 10 bridges and 10km in 3hrs 22mins! If all the pupils collect sponsor money promised, we will have raised over £537 for the charity PEAS.

The founder of the organisation was very impressed by our pupils' aspirational targets: "If all schools today raised as much money per capita as Walworth Academy, we will have exceeded our targets and raised enough money to build an entire new school".

Michelle Gayle visits Walworth Academy to talk about her book Pride and Premiership

Michelle Gayle, former WAG, EastEnders star, and award-winning singer with six top twenty hits, has turned her talents to writing for teenagers. To launch her debut novel Pride and Premiership she is touring schools talking to teenagers.

Year 9 Walworth Academy girls had the privilege of being among the first in the country to meet the new author. The novel is in diary form, written by a girl whose one goal in life is to become a footballer’s girlfriend. But Michelle was keen to remind her audience that there is much more to life than just bagging a boyfriend. As she points out, you are in control of your own destiny and the choices you make. ‘You are not in the 19th century now, girls. You don’t need to rely on Mr Darcy to save the day and it really is possible to have it all.’

The talk sparked off some interesting questions from the students around the cult of celebrity and the pitfalls of the glamorous lifestyle. Being something of a celebrity herself, Michelle was very qualified to talk on the subject. Aimed at 14+ girls who are reluctant readers, Michelle soon had her audience queuing up to have copies of the book signed and dedicated to them.

Pride and Premiership can also claim to be the first young adult novel to be entirely pre-published for mobile phones. The book is available as digital episodes to download on mobile phones.

Walworth Academy Mathematics Association (WAMA)

Congratulations to our Year 8 WAMA pupils:

Lovell Taniah, Elmourabit Amin , Adeoye Adeolu of 8B1　and McCarthy Ben from 8C1 for taking part in the annual ARK maths Challenge, held at King Solomon Academy.

It was a very dynamic and exciting challenge with seven teams competing from the ARK Academies. There were thrilling rounds, both at team and individual level with some very demanding questions and mathematical puzzles. The Walworth Academy team did their level best and came third with each student receiving a bronze medal. This tournament provided an insight for WAMA students to realise there are challenges and opportunities outside of lessons, where skills and knowledge are tested. It was a very inspiring competition and we are looking to achieve gold when the next round is held at Walworth.

Students follow in the footsteps of Wilfred Owen

‘Since we believe not otherwise can kind fires burn...’ Exposure

On the cold morning of November 12th, our coach departed Shorncliffe Road for a weekend study tour of the First World War battlefields in Belgium and France. The tour centred on the life and poetry of Wilfred Owen, the set poet for the AS English Literature examination and our greatest poet of the First World War. We embarked on an in-depth study of the man, his experiences on the battlefields of the Somme and of course, how he recorded these experiences in words. He died in France aged only twenty-five on 4th November 1918 - just one week before the end of the war - leaving behind poems that quite literally changed the way we see war for ever.

During our time, we visited many cemeteries: German, French and British Commonwealth. This was overwhelming for all of us and we were touched deeply.
On the second day, our coach stopped exactly over the location where Owen’s poem The Sentry was set. Just over the hill was the trench where Owen and his soldiers suffered the ferocious winter of January 1917, recorded so hauntingly in his poem Exposure.
It rained continuously. As horrible as the weather was, it brought to mind in a small way something of the conditions and hardships suffered by the men who fought and died. As we toured a Northern Irish trench, the rain didn’t seem to matter as we heard the stories and pictured the events that took place nearly a century ago.

As we have been studying Owen’s poetry, we have become aware of the importance of bearing witness, of not turning away through fear, ignorance or a lack of compassion. We finished the tour standing speechless by Owen’s grave. He is buried in an unremarkable grave in an unremarkable graveyard in a remote French village called Ors, close to where he was shot whilst trying to cross the Sambre canal.

At first, we were upset that Owen’s memory seems so neglected. However, perhaps it is fitting that he now rests alongside his fallen comrades without any distinction; from what we have learnt about the man and the poet, he would not have had it any other way.

Year 10 BTEC Media students get involved with BT's Big Voice

Walworth Academy media students last month attended the BT Big Voice launch event near the Olympic park, in East London. The BT’s Big Voice is a new programme designed for the London 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will teach teenagers how to work in a group, to discuss what needs to change in their communities, to come up with solutions, and to tell their stories through digital media.

Our year 10 BTEC Media students will be involved in this nationwide competition where they will submit their proposals for a film that brings their ideas to life. These proposals will be judged by expert panels and three proposals from each of the 12 nations and regions of the UK will be selected to made into a finished film.

The selected schools will work with the BT Big voice team to produce their films with a £1000 budget each. All the competing films will be shown at Live sites, the giant screens set up to show the London Olympic and Paralympic games in city centres across the UK. They will also be available online and in selected cinemas. The final winner will be announced in June 2012. In the brainstorming session, Walworth Academy students came up with some great ideas on how to change their communities and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Our students also got the opportunity to meet and discuss their ideas with Paralympic gold medallist, Ade Adepitan , which was the highlight of their day!

SSF Festival – Walworth Academy delivered ‘A thrilling performance’

With only 30 minutes on stage the year 10 and 11 cast of Walworth Academy was both brilliantly well received by audiences, as Walworth delivered Shakespeare in a style that displayed each cast member’s ‘clear understanding of the play and the characters’ (Jenni Malarkey, Venue Director)

Each cast member wore a colour to represent their family within the play which also stylishly displayed the Academy logo on the front and a ‘C’ or an ‘M’ on the back for the family name Capulet or Montague. The lighting complimented the cast with electrifying blues and reds in line with the t-shirts worn by each family. Make up was as eccentric and jazzy as the style and thought given to each character.

Walworth is especially proud of its cast members who have already achieved early GCSE grades such as A’s and A*s; yet they remained committed to task and performance regardless and put in the additional time to rehearse, learn lines and perfect characters which in the end made the festival a blast.

We look forward to another year on the big stage, for even bigger and better results in years to come.

Year 11 performance art students to the Oval House Theatre as part of the NIGERIA IN BRITISH PLAYWRIGHTING FESTIVAL

The festival marks the 50th Anniversary of Nigerian Independence with a 3 week run of work focusing on Britain’s Nigerian communities, and celebrating the growing influence of Nigerian playwrights on British theatre and new-writing culture.

The performance the students saw was the Inner City Theatre company play called “Estate Walls”

This play was written by up and coming Nigerian-born playwright Arinze Kene, using rich, witty urban street language.

The students really enjoyed the performance and were excellent audience members, great representatives of Walworth Academy. They also got the opportunity to meet and take pictures with the cast members after the performance.

Trip to Southwark IT project

To help year 10 students with their coursework for the Diploma in Engineering, a group of students visited a local charity on Old Kent Road that specialises in recycling and reusing old IT equipment.

Large companies donate unwanted computers and the charity refurbishes them in order to provide local groups in the area with low cost office equipment to use. The pupils learnt about the services offered, environmental considerations that have to be taken into account and the different checks the IT technicians have to undertake.
